It’s been almost one year on Substack and I love it here. There’s something about it that feels so much like the good old days of blogging. I love the community and how I get to just write what I’m thinking without thinking too much about it. IG exhausts me in every way. I hate the algorithm and all the TikTok videos. There’s a reason I’m not on TikTok. I love my blog and the strategy piece behind it. Creating content there is fun for me.
But then there’s Substack. It’s blog-meets-newsletter in the best way.
I didn’t really get Substack at first. But someone from Substack reached out and asked to chat with me about joining. She broke it all down and I was sold. She also talked me into a paid subscription, which I was against at first. Why would anyone pay for content when they can get it for free elsewhere? She explained it as a way to support a creator that you love, which is something I personally do for others, so why not? I now how much time goes into creating content, and all my blog content is free. Grace described it as a tip jar. I love that.
The biggest sell for me was that any time I shared something in my newsletter, it went out to current subscribers and was gone forever. I love that this functions like a newsletter, but has a home, so content remains accessible. When someone messages to ask how to read about my health journey or going no-contact with my mom, I can point them here.
One of the things I love most about paid subscriptions is that I see paid subscribers as a tighter-knit community. I share those more personal stories that I might not want to share with absolutely everyone. It feels nice to have a smaller group to share those stories with.
If it’s not in your budget or just not your thing, you’ll still get a weekly post that’s the equivalent to my weekly newsletter. Paid subscribers just get more, and there’s more I’d like to offer you as a thank you.
So here’s what you get when you sign up for a paid subscription.
As I mentioned, I love this community, so I’m a lot more open with my paid subscribers. I usually share big things earlier, more behind the scenes stuff, talk about the inner-workings of partnerships and projects, and share some things I don’t want to go out to everyone, like the more personal updates and behind the scenes stuff.
I aim to write one paid and one free post a week. So each month, you’re going to get more content.
I’ve also decided to start giving one paid subscriber a goody box once a month as a thank you for your support. I’ve seen a few others do this – Grace is a favorite who I subscribe to and she does this.
This month is going to be a mix of my favorite beauty products from Coco & Eve, Goop, U Beauty, my favorite CBD gummies and more.
One of the things I treated myself to this year was a paid subscription to your newsletter, and every time you do a post I'm happy that I did this! :)
I love the idea of paid subscribing as a “tip jar” for creators I enjoy where I don’t feel like I am “paying” for their content in the traditional way if I don’t buy a lot of the products they recommend. I have paid subscriptions to 4-5 Substacks (including yours!) and will on occasion rotate them but it feels like having access to some of my favorite magazines but that don’t “pile up” on the coffee table!
