After going all out with the girls’ birthday parties last year, I knew I wanted to do something easier than the Eras Tour. My girls just turned 5 and 7, and I wanted to share how we celebrated their birthdays, and the gifts they received this year.
This year’s gifts reflected more than just wish lists. They captured who my girls are. Whether you're shopping for your own little ones or just love a good behind-the-scenes of family life, here’s a glimpse into what made these birthdays special.
A fundraising opportunity came up in LA, so I booked a trip for me and the girls, and decided to plan a day at Disneyland. Things ended up not working out with the event (shared more about that here), so I added a second day at Disney. Since the trip happened to be right before their birthdays, I figured I could easily talk them out of birthday parties.
We planned on celebrating with a special day and a small playdate for each of the girls. One number balloon and a pack of this rainbow garland. No custom custom birthday banners. It would be a glorified playdate. Each of the girls had two friends from school, and Margot added on a third best friend from preschool. It was so easy.
Grandma got each of the kids new bikes for their birthdays, but last-minute, told the girls they could each pick something special downtown. Grandmas are fun like that.
What My 5 Year Old Got for Her Birthday
Kate specifically asked for a science kit and Gabby’s Dollhouse Lego set. So easy. For our special day downtown, I took her to American Girl and she chose this set from me, and this doll from her Grandma.
And since I’m a sucker, I also got her this, this, and this. Sometimes it’s fun to just say yes and watch their eyes light up. She was so happy, and while I normally don’t like play sets, the girls love their AG Ice Cream Truck and use it all the time.
What My 7 Year Old Got for Her Birthday
Margot really wanted this lego set. I also surprised her with a Harry Potter version of her favorite game, and these dolls (she’s on a big HP kick right now) and some face wash since she lost her mind when we ran into Sephora but is absolutely not getting makeup any time soon. She got this karaoke machine and I made a very last-minute decision to get this for her. Lots of thoughts (and ground rules) on this one so I’ll share more on that later.
We spent her birthday downtown, and I had gotten her the smart watch (which she really wanted) but her grandma offered to buy her one more gift, and she chose this. Knowing how often they play with play food, this will be a huge hit for the next year or two. And it’s on sale.

Happy belated Birthday, little ladies! I'm curious to know how everything goes with the watch. Please keep us updated!
